Achuar delegation from Peru in Vancouver!

Friday, May 3rd, 6:00 PM @ Aboriginal Friendship Centre (1607 E Hastings St.)

CIPO-VAN is helping spread the word about this event. We will also be present at the Friendship Centre. This is a great opportunity to meet and talk with the delegation of the Achuar, and share experiences and stories that they can take home.
Four community leaders from the Amazon are on a cross-Canada tour, starting in Ottawa, jumping over to Calgary, Fort McMurray, Vancouver then finally Haida Gwaii. This is a chance for them to hear from local communities in the North about the practices of large industry operations & resource extraction, the lands and communities at stake, and take this back to their own communities.
One of their stops is at the AGM for Talisman Energy on May 1st in Calgary, where they are requesting to cease from exploration and drilling on their traditional territories in Peru.

Raul Gatica’s Letter to La Jornada in Support of Manuel Arias Montes

At the Mexican Consulate, there will be a “funeral to bury the workers’ rights” with a coffin, tomb stones and crosses with death rights. After signing and delivering a petition letter to the Mexican Consulate we will march to Burrard Skytrain Station to give people some leaflets and continue to CTV office on Burrard and Robson where we will deliver a copy of the petition letter.
As you may have heard, thousands of Mexican and Guatemalan migrant agriculture workers come to work in Canadian fields under the Seasonal Agriculture Workers Program (SAWP). Their contributions to Canada’s economy are tremendous: they work for up to 15 hours a day, 7 days a week. They pay taxes, Employment Insurance, and contribute to the Canadian Pension Plan. Unfortunately, they are not treated with the dignity or respect that we think every worker in Canada receives. When workers face sickness, injuries in the workplace, or abuse from employers, the Mexican or the Guatemalan Consulates rarely defend them. Read the rest of this entry »

=====English=====

Hello all!

We weren’t dead, just out partying! What did you think, that we were out on vacation? Pfft! We’ve been organizing and planning thousands of projects, but we’ve also been involved in a few thosand OTHER projects, so in our now-traditional cipo style, we forget to take care of the basics hehe

We’re working super hard on the creation of TACO, our cipo cooperative, and we continue supporting initiatives from our brothers and sisters of LATUC (facebook.com/latuc.bc), with their Latinoamérica Unida Market. In preparation for this event, we’re hosting a mole party in September!

This Monday, September 26, starting at 6 pm, you are all invited to the cipo-van house (2791 W 11th Avenue, basement entrance at the back) to hang out and help as we can mole from Oaxaca.

If you have any 250 ml canning jars you don’t use anymore (the ones used to can marmalade, pickles & salmon), please let us know if you can donate them to us! We can come pick them up or you can drop them off at the cipo house in case we’re not there. Also, please give us a shout before the 26 if you can make it, ‘cos we want to have enough guacamole and chips for everyone :)

Check out our website (cipovan.org) and facebook page (facebook.com/cipovan) for details, and get ready for an awesome night of work, drinks, and fun!

The Agriculture Workers Alliance, the BC Fed’s Health and Safety Centre and the Street Nurse Program invite you to this year’s Community Health Fair & Independence Day Celebration in Langley. This event is free and open to everyone! The fair focuses on reaching out to temporary workers who come every year to the Fraser Valley and Metro Vancouver areas, especially those who work the fields so we can enjoy great local food our tables.

There will be information tables from Health Canada, WorkSafe BC, the BC Centre for Disease Control, and more. Also, doctors and nurses who can provide services, and other activities such as music, food, games and raffles.

Did you know? September 7th is Brazil Independence Day, and September 15th is most of Central America’s (including Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador), while the 16th is Mexico’s, and the 18th is Chile’s. This is why we are organizing a Latin American Independence Day Celebration after the fair, so that people can join in the joy and celebrations.

We are hoping to bring together the community at large in order to raise awareness about the presence of temporary workers in Canada and their need for support.
