Hi all! This is the main page of our cipo-caravan project. It is primarily designed as your one-stop shop for info on our route, our tentative schedule, and materials. Please check out our main blogroll for posts from the road, etc.
We researched our route a little bit before leaving Vancouver, but we have revised it a little bit. In general, this map of the planned cipo-caravan details the route we’ll be taking. The main change is that we may not go through Puerto Vallarta anymore, as that is a HUGE detour. But it’s a beach, and we have some friends who may catch up with us there, so you never know!
The route from Vancouver to Mexico City is approximately 5,770 km. And it’s around 500 km from Mexico City to Oaxaca. So the cipo-caravan is scheduled to travel around 6,250 km!
We left Vancouver, BC on November 8, 2010, and we’re estimating that it will take about 3 months to make it all the way down to Oaxaca, so we should be making our triumphant entrance around February 25, 2011.
As of this update, we have only made it to Portland, OR. From here we will go to the coast of Oregon, and bike down highway 101 towards the US-Mexico border. We expect to pass through San Francisco, CA around December 4, 2010. From there we will continue towards Los Angeles, CA. We expect to make it there on December 20, 2010. Our trip will then take us through San Diego, CA and we expect to be crossing the border at Tijuana, BCN on December 25, 2010.
From Tijuana we will take the one highway down Baja California towards La Paz, BCS. We expect to make it there on January 15, 2011. We will cross on the ferry towards Mazatlan, Sinaloa, and start heading towards Guadalajara, Jalisco by way of Tepic, Nayarit. We should arrive at Guadalajara on January 22, 2011. We’ll then head towards Mexico City, making it to Morelia, Michoacan on January 29, 2011, and Toluca, Estado de Mexico on February 3, 2011. We expect to make our entrance to a mass reception in Mexico City’s Zocalo on February 5, 2011.
We’ll probably spend a few days in Mexico City before heading out to Oaxaca. We should be leaving on February 12, 2011 and make it to Puebla on February 14, 2011. We’ll pass Tehuacan, Puebla on February 17, 2011, and finally, make our grand entrance to the CIPO house in Oaxaca by February 25, 2011.
Holy crap that’s a LONG trip! =)
On our way, we are hoping to meet with different people and get them to learn a bit about CIPO-VAN, CIPO-RFM and the Agriculture Workers Alliance. We also hope people will sign letters of support of our friend Pablo Lopez Alavez, so that he is released from jail.
It would be AWESOME to have people help us organize small events where we can talk to the community about our bike ride and these issues, so we’ve made a template poster where dates and other info can be added, if you are inclined to help us spread the word ahead of time. Please check out the CIPO-CARAVAN event poster template.
Also, these are documents we’re using in support of Pablo Lopez Alavez. Please note that we have English and Spanish versions of each. We’ve made letters for individuals and for organizations (they vary only slightly in language). In order for the letters to be a bit more effective, please read them in English if you can’t read Spanish, but sign and send the Spanish version, so the Judge can read them easily.
