On Tuesday, June 21, about thirty people, including Mexicans, Guatemalans, Canadians, Chileans and Ecuadorians, expressed their support for the CNTE in front of the Mexican Consulate in Vancouver, Canada. Everyone present declared their rejection of the brutal repression ordered by the government of President Enrique Peña Nieto against against the teachers in Nochixtlan, Oaxaca, which left 9 dead and hundreds injured.
At the gathering, a call was made for the community to organize globally and locally, in order to move beyond protest and put on activities and actions that truly put pressure on the Mexican government. Attendees agreed to meet on Saturday June 25 at the office of the Dignidad Migrante organization, to collectively design a plan of action.
CIPO-VAN would like to invite you to a very special fundraising dinner on June 14, 2014, which marks the 8th anniversary of what became known as “the Oaxaca Commune”: A popular uprising that started on June 14, 2006 against a State government unwilling to address the needs of the population and ready to use public and paramilitary forces in order to silence and murder dissenters.
We will prepare some of the best Mexican food & snacks you’ve ever had, and host a presentation and slideshow about the history of the struggle in Oaxaca since 2006. We will also present our most current campaign, Make Mexico Safe, in support of indigenous community organizers there.
If you cannot make it, please consider making a donation, and please give as generously as you can: without your support it will be very difficult to get this campaign off the ground! The fundraising dinner details are as follows:
Where: Dogwood Centre (706 Clark Drive, at Georgia) When: Saturday, June 14, 2014. Doors at 6 PM, program starts at 6:30 PM. Tickets: $25-$50 sliding scale (no one turned away for lack of funds).
Please call Gil at 604-828-8909 or Raul at 778-791-3419 to make a donation or for more information.
what: Dia de muertos! when: Thursday, November 1, 2012. 4 PM: Join the cooking and altar-making fun! 6 PM onwards: Dinner and Party! where: 2791 W 11th Avenue (back basement entrance)
Dia de muertos is almost here! This is one of the most important festivities in Mexico, especially for indigenous communities. In Vancouver, CIPOVAN will be hosting a party to celebrate and remember this awesome day, and you’re all invited!
We’ll set up an altar for the dead, and make a traditional meal from Oaxaca, including mole negro (chocolate sauce), hot chocolate and pan de muerto (bread of the dead). If you come early you can help us make all of this wonderful food, help shape the bread, and decorate the altar!
Please RSVP: this event, including the meal is by donation (suggested donation: $6), but no one will be turned away. We are working to raise money for the projects of the CIPO communities in Oaxaca, so we will also have some crafts and products to sell from the Margarita Magon women’s cooperative. Also, feel free to bring something to share, as well as pictures or offerings for the altar, if you want. Oh yeah, and BYOB!
